Hey! Welcome to the marketing section. This is one of the most interesting fields you’ll ever come across in your life, simply because it’s an intersection of so many fields.

How I would define marketing: The process of getting people to know what you created and how it benefits them.

There’s a lot that comes under marketing. Some of the words you might’ve heard are: growth marketing, social media marketing, branding, advertisement marketing, etc.

At its core, it’s understanding human behavior and the shifts that happen which change people’s behavior. For example, we used to go to theatres before but now we have Netflix or Prime video. We used to go to restaurants but now we have Swiggy and Zomato. We used to give hard cash or swipe our card but now we can do it with a few taps on our phones.

Once you have some basic understanding in this then it is like a game to play.

I’ve personally been in video editing and made videos that have been run as ads, posted on social media pages and different types of videos that have been made with the intention of marketing it to people. So what I’ll be putting down here is from that perspective.

Marketing is a medium. While it is a subject you can study on your own as well as it is taught in BBA and MBA, end of the day, the way I look at it is that it’s a medium. How?

There are so many different companies in different sectors today, how will they get people to know that they exist and they have a product? Through marketing which acts as the medium to get to the destination, which is awareness or attention. More precisely, awareness through attention.

However, it’s not just one person who would do all the marketing. As I mentioned, it’s an intersection of different fields. I’ll give an example from personal experience:

<aside> 👉 I’ve worked at 2 startups in the year of 2021 as a video editor. First, we have the idea to display, which we do today through content. An editor or designer would create some kind of content to get that idea to a stage where one can see it and understand it. Then this content would be posted somewhere, either on social media or billboards or malls or TVs. Marketing kind of starts at the posting phase.

<aside> 👉 Once you have the materials ready, the questions that would be asked are, “How do I post it to more people can see this?”, “What time is ideal?”, “Are there any specific keywords I should use at some places?” and a lot more. There’s no end to the marketing process necessarily, it’s an ongoing and iterative process.
